Pool Maintenance Checklist for North Texas Summers

July 8, 2026

A pool in North Texas works harder than one almost anywhere else. Between triple-digit stretches, intense sun, and heavy pollen seasons, the margin for skipping a week of maintenance is a lot thinner here than it is in a cooler climate. The good news is that most of what keeps a pool in good shape all summer comes down to a short, repeatable routine.

Test and Balance Your Water at Least Weekly

Chlorine burns off faster in direct heat and sunlight, and pH and alkalinity can drift quickly once bather load picks up. Testing weekly — twice a week during the hottest stretches — catches small imbalances before they turn into cloudy water or algae.

Keep an Eye on the Water Level

Evaporation speeds up dramatically once temperatures cross 100°F, especially with a pump running daily. Letting the water level drop too far below the skimmer can cause it to run dry and strain the motor, so it's worth checking after any particularly hot or windy week.

Clear Skimmers and Baskets Often

DFW summers bring a steady drop of pollen, leaves, and cottonwood into an uncovered pool. A clogged skimmer basket restricts flow to the pump, so emptying it a couple of times a week — more if there's a tree nearby — keeps circulation working the way it's supposed to.

Brush and Vacuum on a Regular Schedule

Warm water grows algae faster than cool water, and it tends to start in the spots circulation misses: steps, corners, and behind ladders. A weekly brush of those areas, followed by a vacuum, keeps it from ever getting a foothold.

Quick Weekly Checklist

  • Test and balance chlorine, pH, and alkalinity
  • Skim surface debris and empty skimmer baskets
  • Brush walls, steps, and corners
  • Vacuum any settled debris
  • Check and top off the water level
  • Rinse or backwash the filter as needed

When to Call in a Professional

A few signs are worth acting on rather than waiting out: water that stays cloudy even when the test kit says chemistry is balanced, algae that keeps coming back within days of treatment, equipment that's short-cycling or making new noises, or test results that don't seem to add up. Any of those usually points to something a weekly routine alone won't fix.

If keeping up with all of this isn't how you want to spend a Saturday, a weekly maintenance plan covers the full checklist above and catches problems before they become repairs.
